Syria
is the original home of the olive tree where it has been cultivated for
thousands of years. Today, Syria is considered the sixth worldwide in term
of olive production. There are approximately 65 million olive tree in
Syria that has produced 866000 tons of olives during the year 2000-2001.
As a result, 142000 tons were used for table olive, while 724000 tons were
milled for olive oil extraction and produced 165000 tons of olive oil. As
the local market consumes about 85.000 tons of olive oil per year, the
total potential export of olive oil was about 80.000 tons during the
season of 2000-2001.
