Essential oils are the vital elements of plants which may be extracted by a variety of processes. They are considered to be vegetable hormones and they are extracted from specific parts of particular species of plants. Vascular plants such as flowering species contain special tissues or vessels for the circulation of fluids. In other plants the oil is distilled from flowers, roots, leaves, fruits, seeds and grasses.

There are an estimated a half million of flora in the world of which many oils are produced and used in different field such as aromatherapy, traditional and modern medicine, perfumes and cosmetics, pharmaceutical industries and others.

Each oil contain many components. On of the most important factors about essential oils is the synergistic effect. That is to say that the effect of all the components of the oil is greater than the sum of individual parts.
